History of Japan Academic Association for Copyright Clearance

The Japan Academic Association for Copyright Clearance (JAACC) was founded in 1989 as a copyright management organization called the “Academic Copyright Council” with the cooperation of the Japan Federation of Engineering Society, the Japanese Association for Dental Science, the Association of Japan Agricultural Scientific Societies and the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan. In 2003, it was reorganized into the present Japan Academic Association for Copyright Clearance, Inc.

Locating the base in Tokyo, Japan, the Association is managing copyrights and neighboring rights not only in Japan but also internationally as a member of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO).

History

1989
  • Foundation of Academic Association Copyright Council (until 1999). It was founded as a copyright management organization with the cooperation of the Japan Federation of Engineering Society, the Japanese Association for Dental Science, the Association of Japan Agricultural Scientific Societies and the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan.
  • Beginning of collective treatment of reprographic rights.
1999
  • Change of the name to Academic Copyright Association (until 2003; business was succeeded)
    Establishment of the Articles of Association and others.
  • Conclusion of a bilateral agreement with Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC) in the US.
2001
  • Enforcement of Law on Management Business of Copyrights and Neighboring Rights.
  • Establishment of a system for treating academic works of joint-stock companies (until 2003: business was succeeded).
2002
  • Registartion as a management business operator under the Law on Management Business of Copyright and Neighboring rights(Agency for Cultural Affairs).
2003
  • Establishment and registration of the present Japan Academic Association for Copyright Clearance, Inc.
